Weitra Castle
Weitra, Austria’s oldest brewing town, lies around 13 kilometres from Gmünd. Renaissance Weitra Castle towers above the historic old town, with origins dating back to the Kuenring dynasty in the 13th century. The castle museum tells the more than 800-year history of the town and its rulers.
The Beer Experience in the medieval cellar is especially popular, offering insights into centuries-old brewing traditions. The tower climb, castle theatre and the so-called Whispering Room are particularly popular with families, and guided tours are held regularly at fixed times.
A tour of Weitra can be combined with the Weitra beer trail through the old town or a trip on the Waldviertelbahn railway. Opening hours and guided-tour times change seasonally and should be checked on the castle’s website in advance.
