Waldviertelbahn Railway

Historic Waldviertelbahn train in the Waldviertel
The Waldviertelbahn has been running between Gmünd, Litschau and Groß Gerungs for more than 120 years. The tourist narrow-gauge railway, with a track gauge of 760 mm, operates on selected dates between early May and late October, travelling through forests and past ponds and impressive granite boulders behind historic steam or diesel locomotives.

The starting point is Gmünd railway station, only a few minutes’ walk from Residenz Royal. Discovery stops with information boards line the route, a snack carriage provides refreshments, and a bicycle carriage makes it possible to combine the journey with a cycling tour, for example along the Iron Curtain Trail.

As timetables, steam-locomotive dates and special services vary seasonally, reservations and a check of the current timetable before arrival are recommended.
